I had always been physically active and understood how important it was to staying mentally and physically healthy. About 15 years ago, my husband passed away, and I was left with 3 children and a job that wasn’t good enough to pay the bills. That was when my physical activity stopped. I had been a dancer, teacher, and choreographer for many years, but there was no longer any joy in dancing and it wasn’t a truly viable career. From the stress of working too many hours, going to school full-time, and raising 3 children without their father, I began to put on weight through stress-eating and lack of sleep. My blood pressure went sky high, my bad cholesterol went up, I was borderline diabetic, and my arthritis was becoming debilitating. I knew that healthy eating and exercise were the answer, but every time I tried to work out, I would injure myself.
At the same time, my mother-in-law also needed to be exercising because she was becoming unsteady on her feet and having her own health issues. There was nothing that she really wanted to do, but when I saw an ad for Curves, I presented it as a possibility. We went to our local Curves and my mother-in-law, who never exercised, decided that she wanted to make a year’s commitment, but only if I joined with her.
We joined in May 2016 and have been working out 3 times a week ever since. I was able to start out at my own pace and my coaches made sure my form was always correct. This helped me find a way to exercise regularly without injuring myself. I have lost over 20 lbs.** since we started. I am no longer having lower back issues and my knees are much better. I had been losing the use of my hands from arthritis and that has improved tremendously. I began to enjoy my physicality – moving and walking more like the dancer I used to be. I fit better in my skin and clothes and gained renewed confidence in what I could do. Even better, the same thing was happening for my mother-in-law. Curves has made a huge difference in how I feel—I haven’t felt this good in years!
