2008 Study:

Comparing traditional weight loss practices with the Curves approach

 

In 2008 Dr Richard B. Kreider, PhD and a team of researchers conducted a blind clinical study on weight loss, body composition, and weight maintenance.

This was to determine which plan is more effective for sedentary obese women: a meal replacement–based diet program (MRP) and encouragement to exercise, or Curves’ meal plan-based diet and supervised exercise program.

From July 2007 to October 2008, 90 obese women completed a 10-week university-based weight loss trial; 77 women from this cohort also completed a 24-week weight maintenance phase. Participants were randomised to participate in an MRP or Curves program.

 

Results

10-Week Weight Loss Phase:

Meal Replacement-Based Diet Program

  • Overall weight loss: 1.6 kg
  • Fat mass loss: 0.9 kg
  • Hip circumference reduction: 0.2 cm
  • Waist circumference reduction: 0.6 cm

Curves Program

  • Overall weight loss: 3.1 kg (lost about twice as much)
  • Fat mass loss: 2.3 kg (lost more than double)
  • Hip circumference reduction: 4.6 cm (lost significantly more)
  • Waist circumference reduction: 2.9 cm (lost nearly 5 times more)
  • Significantly higher moderate and vigorous physical activity undertaken
  • Greater increase in peak aerobic capacity
  • No differences in daily energy intake
24-Week Maintenance Phase:

Curves Group Advantages

  • Maintained higher levels of physical activity
  • Maintained greater weight loss
  • Maintained greater fat loss
  • Showed greater improvement in oxygen uptake and strength
